Mera Peak climbing takes you to the stunning Khumbu region of Nepal. Located in the eastern part of the Himalayas, nestled on the Mahalangur section of the great Himalaya Range. The region consists of several mountain peaks and also is home to the five highest peaks in the world, including the mighty Everest. The Mera summit consist of three peaks, Mera North at an elevation of 6,476 meters, Mera Central at 6,461 meters, and Mera South at 6,065 meters, you will be summiting the Mera Central. Mera Peak Central is an ideal climbing Peak for beginners and advanced climbers and thrill-seekers. The 18 days expedition, although strenuous, is a non-technical adventurous climb.
Starting from Kathmandu to Lukla:
The Mera Peak climbing starts with a flight from Kathmandu to the Lukla airstrip. Regarded as one of the most dangerous airports in the world, the flight is mesmerizing with views of the great Himalayan range and the deep wilderness of the Mahabharat range. Once you land at Tenzing Hilary airport your trek officially starts. From Lukla head on towards the southern trail towards Paiya, crossing a pass of Chutok La. Next head towards Panggom crossing another mountain pass of Khari La, on this section of trail witness majestic views of the Dudh Koshi Valley.
From Panggom, cross yet another mountain pass at an elevation of 3,174 meters of Pankongma La and you will reach Hingku Valley. One of the most isolated sections of the region, where the landscape has remained the same for centuries. Traversing across this trail and you will reach Ramailo Danda. Witness views of Mera Peak and other Himalayan giants Kongde, Manju Peak, and Numbur Himal once you reach Ramailo Danda. From here the trail takes you across the mysterious and deep wilderness of the Makalu Barun National Park. The national park is the world’s only protected area with a tropical forest as well as snowcapped mountains. It is home to a unique range of biodiversity, and you may come across red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan Tahr, and musk deer so keep an eye out.
Chhatra Khola to Kothe:
From Chhatra Khola, head towards the village Kothe. Next following the western trail of the Hinku Valley head towards Thuli Kharka a summer camp used by yak herders. Next head towards Khare traversing across Hinku Nup and Shar glaciers. Mera Peak Base Camp locally is known as Khare and has a close-up view of the north face of Mera Peak. After an acclimatization excursion and pre-climbing training at Khare following day head towards Mera High Camp.
Follow the trail and cross the Mera glacier moraine and rugged terrain with loose rocks and boulders. At the high camp soak in the majestic views of the world’s five highest peaks. Mount Everest stands tall at an elevation of 8,848 meters, Kanchenjunga at 8,586 meters, Lhotse at 8,516 meters, Cho Oyu at 8,188 meters, and Makalu at 8,485 meters. Also witness views of other snowy peaks including Baruntse (7,129m), Gaurishanker (7,134m), and Chamlang (7,319m). Following day head towards the summit and witness much grander views of the landscape like never before. After summiting head back towards Khare. Next, retrace your steps back towards Lukla crossing small hillside settlements and subtropical woodlands. From Lukla catch a flight back to Kathmandu.
