Essential Gears for Trekking in Nepal

So, there are different gears that are essential for treks. But depending on your needs and your trek, people might have other items on their checklist. On this list, I have compiled some of the general and essential items required in almost every trek in Nepal.

Backpack

A good trekking backpack is essential to career your other trekking essentials. The bag size might vary according to the trek and if you have porters. Depending on the trek, carry at least a bag of 45L or bigger to pack your essentials with you. You might be good to go with a 45L bag for a simple teahouse trek but might need a bigger bag for a longer trek. Make sure to carry a comfortable, spacious bag for your every trek.

Hiking Shoes

Not all shoes are trek worthy. Trekking isn’t possible with all kinds of shoes, and to make your trek easier and more comfortable, you need to invest in a good pair of hiking shoes or trekking boots. You might encounter rugged terrain or even might have to walk on heavy snow. You need to have a show that can handle it all. During treks, you need to walk continuously for hours, so get a shoe that is lightweight, comfortable, and made for such terrains.

Clothing

Don’t over or under-pack on clothing for your trek. Have clothing items on your backpack that you are sure you will use, but it does not mean you should under-pack either. It’s always better to pack accordingly than to under-pack to save some space. Avoid bringing unnecessary items and avoid two things that serve the same purpose.

Here are some clothing items you must have.

  • Raincoat,
  • Down Jacket,
  • Fleece Jacket,
  • Hiking pants and shorts,
  • A couple of T-shirts,
  • A couple of pairs of Underwear and Trekking Socks,
  • Sun Hat.
  • Pair of Gloves.

Water Purifiers and Water Bottles

While trekking through the remote areas in Nepal, you might not have access to drinking water throughout your journey. There might be times when you might have to rely on natural sources such as drinking water. Carry a water purifier with you to purify such natural freshwater to risk avoiding any illness.

Water bottles are an absolute necessity. You can fill up your bottles and purify the water whenever you find a water source. Carry at least two water bottles of 1-2L that will be enough for you to store water, even for trails with very few water sources.

First Aid Kit

Anything can happen while trekking. You might have some minor accidents while trekking. You might also face other sicknesses or issues while trekking. Always carry a first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic cream, and medicines like painkillers, Diamox, and other personal medications.

Sun Protection

While trekking, you might be able to walk along natural shade in some areas of the trail, but there are also parts where you might have to walk under direct sunlight. In that case, you need sun protection to protect you from harmful rays.

Carry sunglasses, Sunscreen (better if it has moisturizer), and SPF lip balm to protect you from the harsh sun rays.

Other additional Items

Here are other additional items that you might need for your treks. Some people regard the items as essentials, but that depends on you and your trekking trail.

  • Trekking Pole
  • Thermos flask
  • Universal adaptor
  • Binoculars
  • Watch
  • Snacks
  • Pocket Knife
  • Soap/Shampoo
